Chapter 6

Anna paced the living room floor as Liam set a cup of hot chocolate on the coffee table. “Are you sure about this?”

Liam nodded. “I talked to Cy. He’ll be here in a few minutes. I promise he would never hurt you.”

She stopped pacing. “He already did.”

“That wasn’t him. He was so far gone he doesn’t even remember you.”

She scowled. “How convenient for him.”

He walked up to her. “Don’t misunderstand, I can’t tell you how sorry I am this happened to you. All I ask is that you talk to him, get the entire story. If you wish to move, we will leave tonight.”

She hated the thought of leaving the lair, but she couldn’t stay, anyway. “I will talk to him.”

“He’s here,” Liam said, walking to the door.

Anna stood motionless as Cy entered. He did not possess the angry and aggressive face that she saw in her nightmares. This look held one of torture and shame. His head bowed, and his hands remained behind his back. It took her a moment to discern the differences in his appearance. When he had attacked her, his muscles appeared atrophied. His skin had large open sores and his hair had been white, now he was tanned, strong and only a sliver of gray remained. “Please sit down, Cyril.”

He sat in the chair with his hands clasped in front of him. His eyes remained down. “Thank you,” he whispered.

The pain in his voice made her chest ache. The need to comfort him was overwhelming, and she bit her lip to combat the instinct. She stood in front of him, looking down. It gave her the illusion of power, and she needed that. “Tell me why you attacked me? Liam said you don’t remember me, is that true?”

Cy nodded, but didn’t meet her gaze. “I’m sorry. I have flashes of the time in the lab before I escaped, but that’s when they gave me the drug. Racheal said it gives shifters a temporary high but leaves us addicted and dying. I shouldn’t have survived what they did to me.”

Anna swallowed the bile in her throat. They had given her various drugs as a teen to ensure her obedience. “This drug was on top of the mating hormone?”

“Yes, it’s supposed to kill a shifter if he discontinues use.”

This was a nightmare. If she hadn’t been a victim of Cy’s attack there was no way she would blame him. “What effect did the drug and the mating hormone have on you?”

Cy swallowed. “The pain was excruciating. Racheal says that was the withdrawal from the drug, but I found the urge to find my mate overpowered the pain.”

“Have you attacked anyone since Racheal cured you?”

Cy huffed. “Cured? I will never be cured. I may not remember your attack, but there are many that I do. Those images will haunt me for my entire life. I thought I could heal, move on, I was wrong. Just tell me what you wish me to do and I’ll do it.”

His voice stabbed like a knife.
